Woman Warrior: Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez was born on October 13th, 1989, in The Bronx, New York.  She is a politician and women's rights activist. She has served as the Democratic Party's representative for New York's 14th congressional district since 2019. On June 26, 2018, Ocasio-Cortez won the Democratic Party's primary election for New York's 14th congressional district, garnering nationwide attention. Ocasio-Cortez is the youngest female member ever to serve in the United States Congress.

Congresswoman Ocasio-Cortez proudly co-sponsored and voted in support of the Women's Health Protection Act, which was approved by the House in July 2022. This measure would overturn the Supreme Court's Roe v. Wade decision and legislate abortion rights into federal law.  Ocasio-Cortez, also a member of the Pro-Choice Caucus, favors eliminating the Hyde Amendment, which forbids federal monies from being used to pay abortion services, denying healthcare to millions of low-income families.

  1. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is a name I never heard before reading this blog, but I am so glad I got to learn a little about her. From the small amount of information I learned in this blog, I can tell she is an extremely impressive individual. I was surprised that she is the youngest female member to serve in the United States Congress, and think that she has benefited the Congress already. I enjoyed reading and learning about Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and found her story to be interesting.

  2. I had heard of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez before but didn't know what she had done. The Hyde Amendment is also something I have never heard about, and it shocks me that we have amendments in place that put such limiting things on American households. I find it fascinating that she was the youngest woman to ever serve in congress because we must have people representing modern America and not older people who might be out of touch with a significant part of the population.

  3. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is someone I've heard of many times online. She is a very prominent figure in politics and feminism in America today. You article informed me of AOC's past positions in politics, which I did not know of beforehand. Before I read your article, I never knew the certain laws and acts that AOC has supported.

  4. I've heard about AOC many times before but I never knew many specifics. I wasn't aware of just how much she's done in terms of supporting and enacting certain laws. I also didn't realize she was the youngest woman to serve in congress and one of the only women of color to represent the government. All in all I was quite surprised to see just how much she has done for us

  5. I've learned a lot about the things AOC has done over the years as she is a very hot topic among both parties. I think the reason she is treated as such is because of her willingness to speak up and fight for the things she believes in. I've also watched her do livestreams on Twitch once and awhile, and I think that's a great way to connect with a different audience and promote ideas. She seems to be a real powerhouse in congress, and I'm looking forward to seeing what she can achieve in her political career.
